Stuttgart move into second to kickoff weekend fixtures

02/16/2007 - Frankfurt, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Stuttgart kicked off the weekend Bundesliga action with a dominating 4-0 win at Frankfurt on Friday.

The visitors, who moved into second in the table - four points behind Schalke who plays at Wolfsburg on Saturday and two points up on Werder Bremen who hosts Hamburg Saturday - further solidified their chances at a Champions League with the win. The top two in Germany go straight into the UEFA Champions League, with third place enough for a qualifying berth.

Roberto Hilberto got the scoring started early with a goal in the second minute before Mario Gomez scored his league-leading 13th goal in the 16th minute to double the lead.

Ricardo Osorio made it 3-0 just before the break before Thomas Hitzlsperger closed out the scoring in the 78th minute when he punched in the rebound of his penalty kick to make it 4-0.

In the rest of the fixtures on Saturday, defending champions Bayern Munich, who are currently in fourth place, travel to Alemania Aachen, Bayer Leverkusen hosts Hannover, Mainz travels to Hertha Berlin and Borussia Dortmund hosts Borussia M'gladbach.

On Sunday, Arminia Bielefeld hosts Bochum and Nurnberg hosts Energie Cottbus.

The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.

Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
